On April 22, 1970, people around the world joined together to proclaim the first Earth Day. It was the beginning of the growing awareness that humans were having sometimes harmful effects on our planet Earth through activities such as littering, polluting the air and water through emissions from automobiles and factories, and dumping of industrial waste. As in today's climate action movement, many high school and college students in 1970 were leaders in this brand new environmental movement.
